The Testing Panel: sun cream for skin that tans easily

To make your beauty cabinet shopping a bit easier, each week we're going to give you the low-down on the top five beauty products in one specific category. This week, The Testing Panel looks at sun creams.
Best Treat: La Roche Posay 50+, £17.00 for 200ml, feelunique
After years of irresponsible suntanning I’ve started to get annoying patches of sun pigmentation around my mouth, so now I always use SPF50 on my face. I love La Roche products generally, and this was no exception. It is a very light formula – I often worry about sun cream blocking the pores on my face and causing spots – but it didn’t do this. The slight downside that it has a slightly clinical smell.

Piz Buin Instant Glow Skin SPF 30, £8.50 for 200ml, Boots
I love the smell of Piz Buin – its holiday in a bottle. I usually prefer a cream to a spray but the nozzle was easy to direct and it felt very light – although I got through the can within a week (this might be due to overzealous application). The formula is infused with a subtle golden shimmer, which eases white legs into summer dresses – but does leave your hands covered in glitter.

Riemann P20 SPF 20, £9.19 for 100ml, Lloyds Pharmacy
This is quite a thick oil, so it takes a little while to sink into the skin. But once you’ve slathered it everywhere, then you’re totally sorted for sun protection for the whole day. I’ve tested this both lying on a sunbed and jumping in and out of the pool, and sweating on a bike in 30 degree heat - and I didn’t burn either time, even without reapplying. I didn’t use it on my face as it seemed like it might clog pores, and the other downside was that it did stain a white bikini with a yellowish tinge.

Nuxe Sun SPF 20, £12 for 150ml, Escentual
Nuxe has a lovely fresh smell that isn’t overpowering and doesn’t smell of chemicals. It also had an advantage over other creams in my tried and tested list that it sank in quickly, so you can get dressed straight away, and it is a very reasonable price. But the spray pump was clunky - it came out in dollops and seemed to cover everything else in the immediate area.

Ole Henriksen Protect The Truth SPF 50 £31.00 for 50ml, Look Fantastic
I’m always nervous about putting gloopy suncream on my face for fear of getting spots - but while this came out of the tube thick and white, because it is oil-free it is actually quite light while still very moisturising. But I wasn’t a fan of the citrus smell - from the ‘fruit cell extract’ - which I found a bit overpowering and sickly.
